Oct2010 19

The wonderful people at Oxfam are brining the inspired Oxjam to Brixton this weekend. This is something worth getting excited about. Four of Brixton’s premier venues (and spots of countless sessions) are coming together to raise money for poverty. The party runs from 7pm – 5am in the morning and features an array of talent to suite every type of ear. I could try and explain a little more but I’ll leave it to the guys at OXJAM

“This is the Oxjam Brixton Takeover 2010!! We are bringing you a massive Oxjam lineup that truly represents the cultural cocktail that is Brixton. On the night, four of Brixton’s best loved live music venues will be playing host to the takeover, and each will be bring you a different style of music. At the Windmill we have straight up indie, featuring the downtempo Icelandic stylings of Rokurro. The Rest is Noise will be showcasing the very best in Afro-beat and Hi-Life with Yaaba Funk, Secousse Soundsystem, Plantain and DJs Arnaud, Curtis and Fratts. Upstairs at Ritzy is bringing deep south blues, jazz and acoustic with Sunny B. Walker, Bumi Thomas, Ryan Carr, Ben Thomas and Zara Rubin. Finally, we are taking over the whole of the Dogstar to bring down the house with upfront hip hop, reggae, roots and party flavas! We have the world famous King Tubbys Soundsystem, DJ Vadim, The Illersapiens, DJ LOK, Chris P Cuts, Main Squeeze, Sweetpea, Robin Hood, Odin, Flipz, Grippa and Smitharene.”

BANK HOLIDAY WEEKED

Aug2010 27

Looking for something to do this Bank Holiday weekend. The Brixton venues have all avenues covered.

THE WINDMILL

Friday 27th August

Windmill Brixton presents:
CW STONEKING (Melbourne)
C.W. Stoneking, is a musician who draws influence from pre-war blues, jazz, 1920s calypso, folklore, and personal experience to produce his original songs. Accompanied with his trusty National Resophonic guitar and tenor banjo, or with his brass band, the ‘Primitive Horn Orchestra’ Stoneking’s songs range in style from lonesome field holler blues, to hokum blues duets, to full blown jungle epics.

BRENT NEWMAN & THE BROKEN ARROWS(London)
Born in the Great Plains, raised in the Great Lakes, living in Great Britain, ex-Koreans singer Brent and his band rumble along nicely like Tom Petty sharing a beer with The Spinto Band.

JD SMITH
Rockabilly punk blues.
‘astounding, a Rockabilly and blues one man guitar wunderkind.’ – Distorted magazine

Saturday 28th August

1992: THE YEAR READING PEAKED.
Plus Super Mario Kart 18th Birthday Party!
*Live Nirvana Karoake
*4 or 5 Magicians
*Applicants
*Kannberg 1664
*Amy Blue
*Me And My Sister

BANANIRVANA – Live Nirvana Karaoke Band!
At 10pm, a live trio of stonking rock musicians take to the stage to form Bananirvana – the world’s greatest Nirvana tribute – for one night only. Jon is Krist Novoselic on bass, Dan is Dave Grohl on drums, and Sam is Kurt Cobain’s hands on guitar.
And Kurt’s voice? Well in addition to some very special indie-rock celebrities on guest vocals, this is YOU!
A 20 song set will be played, picking the best of the actual Nirvana set on the night, and every song will feature a different singer. Applications for potential Kurts are open to anyone, male or female, we just ask the following things :

4 or 5 MAGICIANS…as Manic Street Preachers
Brighton five-piece 4 or 5 Magicians are more exciting than the prospect of Paul Daniels actually fulfilling his long-running promise to leave the country under a Labour regime.

APPLICANTS…as EMF
Techinicolour splattercore as if played by dinosaurs with gnarly claws.
‘The intercontinental Applicants… parallel universe popstars with a fondness for fake blood and liver-destroying quantities of booze, and that’s just on the bus to the the gig.

KANNBERG 1664..as Pavement
Reunited for one show (after a successful show at the recent Pavement alldayer), Alexei from Johnny Foreginer, Craig from Internet Forever, Aaron from Eelectricity and Lust, and Dan from 4 or 5 Magicians join forces for ten top tunes from Stockton, California’s finest.

AMY BLUE ..as Smashing Pumpkins
AMY BLUE make beautiful, dark and electrifying music that’s different from every band you’ve heard this year, or last decade. Pitchfork said they were ‘pretty clever actually’.

ME AND MY SISTER..as Bjorn Again
are made up of, err, two sisters: Vicki and Becky… or VECKY as they are sometimes called.

Sun 29th SUNDAY BBQ
*Poeticat
*Corporal Machine & The Bombers
*Milk Kan
*Ratface
*Paranoia Pete POETICAT
Spoken word, experimental vocals, raw melodic acoustic guitar, and the earthy pulse of the cajon!

MILK KAN
Our favourite hiphop bluegrass punkers throw an end of summer party with some likeminded crazy souls.

RATFACE
Joining the dots between DIY British Punk and Alternative Hip Hop, Bristols Finest Bedsit MC blasts out raw energetic vocals laced over rough-cut keys, beats and guitars to produce what are essentially charming and vital pop songs.

CORPORAL MACHINE & THE BOMBERS
Every gig deserves a tuba and the Corporal has one in his massed ranks, who together create great knees-up music hall punk.

PARANOIA PETE

Mon 30th Bank Holiday Monday BBQ
*Mobius Loop
*Evans The Death
*The Owls Are Not What They Seem
*Lion O’Brien
*Tiny Birds

MOBIUS LOOP
From Preston, but now living in a van in Streatham. They play measured folk-blues with a splash of reggae and some furious guitar wigouts.
Onstage:

EVANS THE DEATH
…come from Clapham and Chelmsford. They do JANGLE and they do NOISE. it’s a winning combo and many bloggers are already on to the melodic joys of this young half-south-London band.

THE OWLS ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM
Mixing junk shop melodies, gin-soaked harmonies, scratchy guitars and lush Autoharp swells The Owls are not what they seem have inadvertently slapped the face of the traditional indie pop line up.

LION O’BRIEN
…write songs about love, work, robots, vampires and other aspects of common everyday life. Blending sharp lyrics with infectious melodies and anthemic choruses, Lion O’Brien are striving to forge their own original brand of feel-good indie with a splash of folk-pop.
Tonight they’ll be playing more a chilled-out stripped down acoustic set.
‘Gorgeous, sharp, life-affirming pop music – you can’t beat it! ‘ – TOM ROBINSON BBC 6 MUSIC

TINY BIRDS
With songs covering themes from 16th century painting to the joys of London’s night buses, Tiny Birds mix folk sounds with indie songwriting along the lines of Hefner, Fanfarlo, Arcade Fire and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. If you like vocal harmonies, banjos, ukuleles and sad songs with happy music, they’ll be right up your street.

Here it goes. We are live. Welcome, Welkommen, Hello etc etc.

Brixton Sessions is not trying to change the world. We just want you to have access to the wide range of amazing talent that passes through our borough of London. We are not the first to do the videos on the web thing and we won’t be the last. We just hope that these performances offer a different insight and, more importantly, are enjoyable to watch. The aim is to capture the talent of the performers by producing one take films. – no second chances, no editing tricks, no audio sweetening. Just great music.
